The first question my rehab doctor asked
Charlie shares the direct question that opened a conversation about sexual health during rehab.

And I was rolling out to physical therapy and my first conversation with my doctor was she walked into the room as I was rolling out. she stopped me and literally the first words out of her mouth were, when's the last time you had an erection? So right there kind of showcased to me how important sexual health is to people with spinal cord injuries and to people in general
Feeling desirable again
Dr. Tepper talks about the emotional support, wisdom, and strength a person brings to a relationship.

Yeah, I think a lot of people and me as well, after you have a spinal cord injury, you don't think anybody wants you or that you have anything to offer a partner? What's some helpful ways for people to start feeling desirable again? Oh, wow, there's so many, yeah. And that is to explain to people that, boy, so many people need the kind of support that we could give them and the kind of wisdom we can share with them, right? And so the kind of physical help could always be outsourced, but the emotional support that we could offer somebody, the guidance, sharing our strength, right, is what so many people need from a partner, right?
Connection matters
A short moment about pleasure, intimacy, and the quality of the connection.

The feelings in your heart are more important than the feelings in your genitals. The third is that the quality of the connection is more important than the quality of the erection or any kind of sexual function, right?
How do you talk about your needs?
A conversation about sharing your injury and assistance needs with a prospective partner.
Read the clip transcript
How do you bring that stuff up to a prospective partner, your injury, assistance needs, and without turning it into like a medical briefing? you don't have to dump it all out front, right, but you, but you don't want to keep it a secret, right, and so you want to really begin to establish a connection. And when it looks like it might go sexual, and now you already have a connection, things you're talking about, then you say, listen, I really like you. But before we get physical, there's some things I want you to understand. And then you could explain to them, what you need to do and why.
